Shakal and naghma in the melodic mode of bopali (bhupali)
Afghan virtuoso rebâb player Ustad Mohammad Omar, accompanied by Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain, begins this piece with a free-rhythm improvisation (shakal). He then moves into the naghma, a four-part section, set in tintal, a 16-beat repeating rhythmic pattern. The piece is in the melodic mode of bopali. The performer must retune the sympathetic strings every time he changes modes.
