Mgubo

Group of old Hlubi men
A series of songs make up this pre-initiation dance, called mgubo, from the Hlubi of South Africa. The dancers sing as they clap sticks together. The occasional outburst of a horn can be heard. The player is blowing through an old rubber bulb type bicycle horn. The singers and dancers stand in a ring. An individual comes out into the ring, shouting out, and introduces his own song. The songs have a leader-chorus form but the chorus also overlaps with the leader.
