By becoming a member you will enjoy valuable benefits while also helping to support our educational, non-profit mission. While Smithsonian Folkways is a part of Smithsonian Institution, the activities of the record label are entirely funded through the sale and distribution of our sound recordings. Your membership will help us continue releasing remarkable recordings that celebrate musical diversity and cultural dialogue.

Given the value of the benefits, the IRS will not accept our standard membership as a tax-deductible gift. However, if you agree to waive the benefits, you can become a member by signing up for a tax-deductible donation membership. You will be offered a chance to renew your donation membership annually. The Smithsonian Folkways membership is a 12-month pledge. Members making monthly payments may only cancel their subscription after a minimum of twelve monthly installments. This can be done by contacting our customer service staff at 1-888-FOLKWAYS or FolkwaysMembership@si.edu. Or by logging into your My Account page and uncheck the auto-renewal button.

All memberships will be automatically renewed for an additional year upon expiration of the membership term, unless Members contact Smithsonian Folkways no less than 14 days prior to the expiration of the then-current membership term to cancel the upcoming renewal. Renewal memberships will be charged according to the billing method and payment source authorized upon enrollment.

We highly recommend paying by credit card, as this allows for automated monthly payments. Monthly PayPal payments cannot be processed; however one time payments for Folkways Members ($220), Folkways Supporters ($500), and Folkways Patrons ($1000) are accepted via PayPal. Simply login here, browse the catalogue online and select the music you want to hear by adding it to your cart. When you go to the shopping cart/checkout, you will see that downloads go to a $0 charge, and any other products are discounted by 20% - 30% depending on your membership tier. No other discounts/promotions can be applied with any membership purchases. For instructions or more information regarding how to download our music, go here.

You will be sent a notice through email when you are approaching your limit. If you would like to know your balance at any time, contact us at any time. Please contact us at 1-888-FOLKWAYS or FolkwaysMembership@si.edu with any questions regarding the status of your downloads, or with any other questions regarding your membership account.

Yes, upon your renewal date, the balance will be reset to $0.

Yes, your other benefits will remain valid for the duration of your membership. You will still receive 20-30% off items (discount varies depending on membership plan).

Please ensure that you are logged in to your account. If you have just become a member, allow 48 hours for your membership status to update. If you have logged in after this period and the discount has not been applied to your purchases, please contact us at 1-888-FOLKWAYS or FolkwaysMembership@si.edu.

You can select No Rewards when purchasing a membership.

Gift rewards are shipped free throughout the membership year. To make a gift selection (dependent on membership tier) request one by contacting us via email or phone. Your member special gift will be sent annually.

Your card will be charged monthly on the date of your order, and on your anniversary date of your original date your first pledge was made.

To update your account information please contact us via email or phone. To update your credit card information, sign in to your My Account page located in the Checkout .

You can upgrade your membership for the following year, when your current membership expires.
