June 17–21, 2019
West Virginia University
Morgantown, West Virginia

West Virginia University's School of Music will host its fourth Smithsonian Folkways certificate course in World Music Pedagogy, June 17-21, 2019. Participants will engage with world music in daily workshops featuring several musical cultures, including Central Appalachia, Brazil, and West Africa led by WVU faculty and guest artists. Through this partnership with Smithsonian Folkways, K-12, university, and community teachers will develop a foundation in world music pedagogy and be introduced to an extensive archive of audio, video, print, and ethnographic resources created to support curricular innovation that connects music programs with the vibrant local and global musical cultures in their surrounding communities. Participants will apply the principles and practices of world music pedagogy in a culminating project that features the rich multicultural resources available from Smithsonian Folkways. Teachers successfully completing all course requirements will receive documentation from the Smithsonian Institute certifying specialized study in world music pedagogy.

Lead faculty include:

  • Janet Robbins (Brazil, pedagogy)
  • Travis Stimeling (Appalachia)
  • Mike Vercelli (West Africa, Brazil)
  • Juliana Cantarelli Vita (Brazil, pedagogy)
