A man sings in a forced, guttural voice as he leads young Mpondo men of the Lusikisiki District, Cape Province, South Africa, in a gubura dance. They perform in a tightly packed circle, each singing into a cupped hand that moves slightly to and fro, to produce a vibrato effect.
