Ever wonder what a western Louisiana Cajun dance hall sounds like on a Saturday night? The Cajun Swing features a dozen Cajun songs recorded in stereo and will make you want to get out of your chair for a whirl around the dance floor…or your kitchen. The principal performers are Jay Pelsia on pedal steel guitar, Nathan Menard on button accordion, and Ray Thibodeaux, vocals and drums. Two Cajun fiddlers and a bassist complete the band. The songs are a mix of Cajun waltz and two-step dance music with lyrics sung in Cajun French. Of interest on this recording is the pedal steel guitar, an instrument not always associated with Cajun music. This is the only recording by either Pelsia or Menard in the Smithsonian Folkways collection. Liner notes include a brief history of Cajun music and photos of the band.
