The New Dawn (1845)
This song was written by Lily Ramcharan’s teacher James Ramsewak to mark the 150 years since the arrival of the first Indians in Trinidad. It describes the trials and tribulations of the indentured labour, going on to describe the progress made by the East Indians who today are "doctors, lawyers, engineers and politicians." The song, which is a mixture of English and Hindi, celebrates Trinidad and Tobago as Trinbago Mahan the great Trinbago where they have found their homes and prosperity.
