Haile Selassie's 80th Birthday Celebration: Burgi Tribe
A considerable body of Ethiopian music features rhythmic complexity and percussion instruments but a direct musical link between Rastafarian and Ethiopian music genres has not been established by historians. Rastafarianism arose on Creolized African-Jamaican cultural ground. For a taste of one Ethiopian vocal and percussion style, this recording was captured at "Haile Selassie's 80th Birthday Celebration," the performers are a Burji [spelled "Burgi" then] group in the arid southwestern Ethiopian border district of Moyale by Lin Lerner and Chad Wollner in the early 1970s.
