Speaking about Mexican music is something truly special. Since I can remember, the sound of mariachi has been a constant presence in my life. I had the great fortune of learning from two exceptional masters: my grandfather, Vicente, taught me that the essence of our country and our roots is reflected in hard work, love, and the joy of our celebrations. He conveyed the profound meaning of our charro suits as a national symbol, representing our people, the community we come from, and for whom we sing. My father, Alejandro, showed me that for a Mexican, there are no borders, especially for the voice. By his side, I have witnessed the admiration that the entire world feels for our nation.
With all of this in my heart, you can imagine that choosing my favorite Mexican songs from the Smithsonian Folkways catalog is no easy task. However, exploring this valuable musical collection of my country has been one of the most enriching experiences I have had. The twelve songs I have gathered here are those that, in my opinion, best represent us as Mexicans. I hope you enjoy them.
