On the Great Divide

The New Lost City Ramblers were pioneers in the performance of Southern mountain music during the folk music revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s. They brought the sounds of genuine old-time string band music and early bluegrass to eager city and college audiences who had grown disillusioned with the commercial fare of the folk music boom. Recorded before an audience in San Francisco in 1973, Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tracy Schwartz present their interpretation of traditional ballads— mountain and southern "old-timey" songs and styles found on commercial recordings of rural southern music mainly from the 1920s to the 1940s. Liner notes, written by John Cohen, provide background of each song, along with general information about the NLCR and their music.
