A Conversation with Chris Smither: The Influence of Folkways [Interview Video]

Legendary singer-songwriter Chris Smither sat down with us at the Newport Folk Festival to discuss Folkways Records' major influence on him as a budding artist, from Eric Von Schmidt to Dave Van Ronk. His song "Another Way to Find You" is included on the 1983 album CooP - Fast Folk Musical Magazine (Vol. 2, No. 6) Traditional Songs, out on Smithsonian Folkways.

Fast Folk Musical Magazine continued its second year of publication with a collection of another dozen songs, this one focusing on traditional folk songs and songs written in traditional folk music styles. The pieces range from tales of lost love to tales of soldiers and sailors and include two guitar instrumentals: the Celtic "Si Bheag, Si Mhor," performed by guitarist Mike Agranoff, and "Return from Fingal" by Ken Perlman. Others contributing performances are Chris Smither ("Another Way to Find You"), John Roberts performing the Scottish song "Enlist, Bonnie Laddie," French folk singer Gabriel Yacoub singing "Bon An, Mal An," English folk singer Richard Fewtrell ("Love Is Kind"), and the female quintet A Soldier’s Fancy ("Wondrous Love"). A 21-page edition of The CooPis included with the collection.
