Armenian Song & Dance Ensemble
Armenian Festival (LP edition) Featuring the Armenian Song and Dance Ensemble, this recording provides a sampling of Armenian folk music and some of the traditional musical instruments used. Accompanied by the duduk, a double-reeded flute, and the tar, a stringed, lute-like instrument, the singers present a repertoire about farming, nature, love, and life in the mountains. Among the performers are the Armenian State Chorus, the Armenian Orchestra of Folk Instruments, vocal soloist Vagarshak Mamikonian, and tar soloist Solomon Seiranian. One musical genre of particular interest in this album is the horovel, or a song sung while plowing fields; listen for “Song of the Harvester.” Liner notes include a brief description of each song’s content and soloists’ names.
