Slavonic Orthodox Liturgy

This recording presents a selection of 10 hymns from the Slavic Orthodox liturgy as written by St. John Chrysostom (aka St. John the Golden-Mouthed or Golden Tongue; in Slavic Jovan Zlatoust), the 11th archbishop of Constantinople. Recorded live at the St. Aleksandr Nevsky Memorial Cathedral in Sofia, Bulgaria, the Svetoslav Obretenov Bulgarian Choir (under the direction of Georgi Robev) takes full advantage of the building’s excellent acoustics. These pieces are sung by an unaccompanied choir of mixed voices, as is typical for liturgical singing at Slavic Orthodox churches. The melodies were written by various composers from different time periods, including Bulgarian composer Dobri Khristov, who was a student of Czech composer AntonÃn Dvořák. Liner notes include brief information on the music and the choir.
