Ballads and Songs of Tradition: From the Folk-Legacy Archives

Various Artists

An influential label during the folk revival of the 1960s, Folk-Legacy Records offered exceptional examples of revival interpreters and original field recordings from tradition-bearers of Anglo-American folk music. This collection, originally released in 2000, consists of several field recordings from the late 1950s and early 1960s, recorded by the label’s co-founders Sandy Paton and Lee Hagerty during the earliest years of the label’s existence. Featuring performers from the British Isles and the United States, many names familiar to the Folk-Legacy catalog are present, including Frank Proffitt, Jeannie Robertson, and Marie Hare, in addition to field recordings from otherwise unknown and unrecorded singers and instrumentalists. Similarly, while many of the selections on this album are versions of known songs and ballads, others are rare; extensive notes compiled by Paton detail the history of the songs and the circumstances of their recording. Together, Ballads and Songs of Tradition speaks to the core mission of Folk-Legacy Records—to preserve and transmit traditional music.
