In the face of French rule that had persisted for over 100 years, the Algerian independence movement coalesced around the National Liberation Front (FLN) in 1954. The songs in this collection—performed in Arabic by members of the FLN Algerian choir, with a full choral sound and accompanying instrumentation—narrate the struggle for freedom and continual quest for national identity. Not only are the songs reminders of the trials of colonial oppression, but they also are a testament to the power of music to bring people together. Independence was finally attained in 1962. The liner notes provide an English translation of the songs.
