Netukulimk: Respect, Relationship, Responsibility, Reciprocity in Mi'kmaw Music
The Mi'kmaq see music and dance as powerful vehicles to preserve and rejuvenate their language and culture. After years of elder generations not being allowed to sing their songs or speak their language, young people in Mi'kmaw communities now have opportunities to learn and sing songs in their language - and they frequently do. Today, it is common to hear the youth in Mi'kmaw communities sit at a drum and sing the “Mi’kmaq Honour Song,” and for the children to join the drummers for a chance to enjoy the songs and stories that the Sons of Membertou and other Mi'kmaw musicians so love to share.
