Dukar Dorjeen Ritual Music (Monpa Ritual music for the goddess Dukar)
The service begins with a long instrumental introduction, followed by recitation in the tantric style. The Rimpoche rings a bell to announce the beginning or end of sections. The recitation is combined with playing the 'bubhjah' and 'dah' with a precise combination of beats. This is followed by the playing of various instruments. At some moments, special kriyas or mudras (hand positions) are used only by senior lamas. This five day long ritual is performed to fight against the ‘8400 delusions’ , to protect people from obstacles, and help them attain Buddha-hood. The Dukar is the mighty goddess with thousand eyes and hands, who is celebrated in this festival. Around 15 senior monks attend the service.
