Smithsonian Folkways Curator & Director Daniel Sheehy Announces Retirement
Smithsonian Folkways curator and director Daniel Sheehy has announced that he will retire from the Smithsonian once a replacement has been identified. Sheehy, who was recently named a 2015 NEA National Heritage Fellow, took the Smithsonian Folkways helm in 2000, and under his direction, the label has published more than 200 recordings, including the ten-volume Music of Central Asia series, the African American Legacy Series (co-sponsored by the National Museum of African American History and Culture), and the Tradiciones/Traditions Series of signature music from Latin America and Latino USA (co-sponsored by the Smithsonian Latino Center). During his tenure, Smithsonian Folkways albums have earned five GRAMMY awards, one LATIN GRAMMY award, and many other awards and nominations. Regarding his work with the label, Sheehy commented, “Serving as director and curator of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings over the past 15 years has been a dream come true, one of the greatest learning opportunities of my life. While I will be leaving its leadership position over the coming months, I look forward to being a supporter of its nonprofit mission far into the future.”
