Norwegian Folk Songs

Pelle Joner
Norwegian Folk Songs The music in this collection of Norwegian folk songs, many of unknown origin, represents the folk traditions of working Norwegians—from lumbermen to farmers, and from hunters to fisherman. Many of the older Scandinavian folk ballads emphasize storytelling, with nature playing an important role. Of particular interest is the ballad “Bendik og Arolilj,” an example of a “knight’s ballad” of ill–fated love most likely inspired by the legend Tristan and Isolde. It is believed that this ballad was translated from French into Norwegian during the 14th century. Norwegian troubadour Pelle Joner, accompanying himself on guitar, performs the songs with somber homage. All of the song lyrics are provided in Norwegian with English translation in the liner notes.
