People's Picks: Mali Obomsawin | Smithsonian Folkways Recordings

This selection provides glances into unacknowledged movements and under-celebrated victories for communities resisting colonization. From Haiti’s overthrow of their colonizers in 1791 to the victory over General Custer at Little Bighorn (1876), triumphs of oppressed people of color over their colonizers are seldom spotlighted. The playlist tracks important musical influences through histories of resistance, featuring some important women who had unsung influence over spiritual, musical or political movements.
