The Brain on Banjos

The Brain on Banjos
The Brain on Banjos | Smithsonian Folkways Recordings

Curated by Pharis & Jason Romero. A journey through one man’s banjo obsession. He first heard live banjo at 19 in an Irish pub band, and thirty years later is full time making, playing and thinking about banjos for work and joy. Jason moves slowly through the deep and beautiful forest of North American banjo music, meeting the greats and the obscure along the way. This playlist is a more-or-less chronological journey of first hearing these tracks, each song connecting to where his banjo trip took him next. In some ways this entire playlist could be Mike Seeger’s Southern Banjo Sounds, but mostly this playlist barely skims the surface. Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Don Reno and so many other early and later players are on this playlist too, and have occupied hundreds of hours of listening time.
