"Madh" is a devotional song of praise sung to the Prophet and to the imams. This example comes from the Isma'ilis of Badakhshan, in southern Tajikistan, and is expressed for the Family of the Prophet (Ahl al Bayt), and particularly for the first Shia Imam, Ali. It progressively takes the form of a zikr, a litany leading to spiritual ecstasy. The performers are father and son, learned religious men from the Isma'ili tradition. (During, Levin 2001)
