African and Afro-American Drums is an examination of African drumming and its influence on the music of the Americas. Representing eight countries in the American continents, Harold Courlander has compiled an anthology of drum music from three continents and explores its various uses as well as chronicles the evolution of drum music. Extensive liner notes accompany this album and include a transcription of Haitian Juba Dance drums by George Herzog.

En representación de ocho países del continente americano, Harold Courlander ha compilado una antología de la música del tambor de tres continentes y explora sus diferentes usos, así como una crónica de la evolución de la música del tambor. Notas extensas acompañan este álbum e incluyen una transcripción de George Herzog sobre la danza Jubá con tambores de Haití.

*Note that the colonial spelling of "Ruanda" was changed to "Rwanda" when the country gained independence in 1962 (after the release of this album).
