African Songs and Rhythms For Children--Recorded and Annotated by Dr. W.K. Amoaku
Various Artists

This recording is designed to teach music to African children using a method called Orff Schulwerk (Schoolwork) or the Orff Approach, developed by German composer Dr. Carl Orff in the 1920s. The album, containing lullabies, a funeral lament, and other songs, represents the African version of the method, re-emphasizing “the close interrelationship between the traditional African approach and Orff Schulwerk, i.e., rhythm, movement, and improvisation, which for many years were not considered by most music educators as an important aspect of music education.”
