Songs and Dances

To celebrate the various cultural groups in the Philippines, the songs on this album introduce listeners to dances, rituals, and folk music. The music falls into five thematic groups: dances from mountain provinces, Spanish influences in the Philippines, the Muslim population in the southern Philippines, regional performances from different islands of the Philippines, and music of the rural areas. The album includes songs of war and celebration, choral folk music performed in Tagalog, and dances such as the tinikling, in which dancers step to the music between two bamboo poles. Liner notes include short descriptions of each piece and a summary of the group’s history.
