Corridos and Tragedias de la Frontera: Historic Mexican-American Ballads 1928-1937

Corridos and tragedias (ballads and tragedies) have been sung on both sides of the Mexico/United States border for many years; the writing and performance of corridos have been traced back to the early 1800s. The songs are often about oppression, history, the daily life of peasants, and other socially relevant topics. Both old and new, based on events true and fictional, the songs constitute a significant element of the popular music and literature of the Mexican and Mexican American community. This 2-CD collection serves as a primer for listeners of the early corrido recordings (1928–1937). A 168-page booklet detailing information about the genre, singers, and the songs accompanies the recording.
