Bluegrass

David and Billie Ray Johnson
Bluegrass Guitarist Billie Ray Johnson (c. 1929–2013) joins son David (b. 1954) on this 1983 instrumental album, which consists of traditional and contemporary bluegrass songs; the artists arranged all of them paying particular homage to the bluegrass styles of Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs. David was taught to play guitar by his father at a very young age. “By the time I was 4 or 5 years old,” he explains, “I would get [my dad’s] guitar and bang around on it. He started showing me the proper way to make chords. Finally be bought me my own guitar and he started teaching me how to play.” Liner notes include background information about each of the 12 selections.
