Jumps, Boogies and Wobbles

Howell Devine is a San Francisco–based trio composed of guitarist/vocalist Joshua Howell, drummer Pete Devine (who doubles on washboard), and Joe Kyle Jr. on acoustic bass. On this recording for Arhoolie, the trio offers their interpretation of Delta country blues, playing both traditional and original music. The band opens with a rousing “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” and continues through their set of blues and boogie, closing with Mississippi Fred McDowell’s “Write Me a Few of Your Lines.” Saxophonist Ralph Carney sits in on “Harmonica Wobble #2” and “Spoonful.”
