Modern Sounds of Ancient Juju

For their second album for Arhoolie, the Howell Devine band continues to display their traditional Mississippi Delta country blues roots. The San Francisco–based trio is composed of guitarist/vocalist Joshua Howell, drummer Pete Devine (who doubles on washboard), and Joe Kyle Jr. on acoustic bass. The band opens with their take of Muddy Waters’s “Can’t Be Satisfied” and continues their set with a mix of traditional and original blues songs. As blues harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite notes in his liner notes, “Even though they are playing a traditional style and playing it very, very well, it always sounds fresh and alive with lots of good feeling.”
