The Cheese Stands Alone
Michael Cooney is a folk singer who began his career during the revival of the 1960's, eventually going on to serve on the boards of the Newport and National folk festivals. On The Cheese Stands Alone, Cooney performs several American folk songs accompanying himself on guitar and banjo. The songs are of various origins and cover a range of topics. Some are camp songs Cooney first encountered as a child and should be recognizable to many ("Turkey in the Straw", "Jim Crack Corn"); others are more serious, including anti-war songs of several eras likely chosen for their contemporary relevance during the album's recording in 1968.
