Congratulations to Smithsonian Folkways Grammy Winners

Congratulations to all of the 2020 GRAMMY award winners and nominees! Smithsonian Folkways artists and projects managed to take home two awards: Best Historical Album for Pete Seeger: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection, honoring the work of Jeff Place & Robert Santelli, compilation producers and Pete Reiniger, mastering engineer; and Best Regional Mexican Music Album (Including Tejano) for Mariachi Los Camperos' De Ayer Para Siempre. We are so proud of all of our nominees, which also included Our Native Daughters and songwriter Amythyst Kiah, who were nominated for Best American Roots Song for "Black Myself" and Best Album Notes from curator and producer Jeff Place for Pete Seeger: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection.

On Pete Seeger: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection, Jeff Place says "We are really pleased to have been awarded a Grammy Award for Best Historical album for the year 2020. The album is a comprehensive project chronicling the life and music of Pete Seeger. It is gratifying to have the recognition and to get Pete's story out to public."

Smithsonian Folkways Director Huib Schippers is elated: "For us, this is really the crown on our hard work in 2019, which marks a kind of renaissance for the iconic label: continuing to honor our past with great historical releases, and highlighting the work of contemporary artists who celebrate diversity and social justice."

Smithsonian Folkways has been awarded nine GRAMMYs since our first wins in 1997 for the Anthology of American Folk Music collection. In fact, four of the wins have included Jeff Place: Best Historical Album and Best Album Notes for Anthology of American Folk Music (1997), Best Boxed Set or Limited Edition Package for Woody at 100: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Collection (2013), and now Best Historical Album for Pete Seeger: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection.

At this year's annual International Folk Music Awards at the Folk Alliance International conference, Amythyst Kiah of Our Native Daughters won an award for the Song of the Year category, while Lula Wiles were nominated for Artist of the Year.
