Before curing a patient, a healer of the Ghanaian Ga people might require the music and dance of the akroma to be performed, which invokes the spirits of certain animals known to have powerful healing capabilities: the cow, the squirrel or the vulture. This spiritually healing music incorporates drums called ampaa, adzankua and mmama and bells called nono as well as singing.
