From Saigon: the sounds of sonar, tank caterpillars and machine-gun fire overshadow a schoolchildren’s math lesson and a prayer for peace prayed by a monk; we observe American soldiers blunting their confusion with booze, as they make arrangements with prostitutes…One man wonders, “I don’t even know what I’ll do when I get back to the world, but I hope I’ll do something good.” Good Morning, Vietnam is a sound collage compiled by Claude Johner, a photographer who was touched by the ravages of war, “the reality of which is beyond those who direct it.”
