Spirit of the Black Territory Bands

In this 1992 recording, musician and bandleader Johnny Otis (1921–2012) pays tribute to the black swing bands of the 1930s and 40s, leading 14 musicians in the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, and Jay McShann. Otis also plays his version of his 1945 hit recording of “Harlem Nocturne.” The liner notes are written by San Francisco Bay-area music critic Lee Hildebrand.
