On his tenth Folkways album, singer-musician Kevin Roth is accompanied by an instrumental sextet and two additional voices to create an intriguing mix of “new folk” and “new age” music. In addition to seven original songs, Roth includes Sonny Rollins’ jazz standard “St Thomas,” Todd Rundgren’s break-up ballad “Can We Still Be Friends,” and British singer Bridgette St. John’s “Moody” on this recording. Roth dedicates Women to his mother Mary (“…for all the right reasons”) and includes a photo of himself as a baby on his mother’s lap. Complete lyrics are transcribed in the liner notes.
