The Best of Mance Lipscomb

Mance Lipscomb (1895–1976) considered himself to be a Texas sharecropper and songster. He was the first artist recorded by Arhoolie, and the album—fittingly titled Texas Sharecropper and Songster—resulted in invitations to music festivals and additional recordings over the remainder of his life. The success of these recordings enabled Lipscomb to enjoy a degree of financial security late in life. This collection includes one of his best-known songs, “Tom Moore’s Farm,” a commentary on life as a sharecropper in the segregated South.
