Poor Old Horse, named from the eponymous shanty (Roud 513), was a trans-Atlantic folk trio founded by David Jones, Tom Gibney, and former Young Tradition singer Heather Wood. On this release, they present a mix of Anglo-American folk music, including the classic ballads “Reynardine” and “Jimmy Randall,” devotional songs, love songs, and more. Taking inspiration from the likes of the Copper Family, The New Lost City Ramblers, Doc Watson, and Shirley Collins (from whom Wood learned the song “Briggs Fair”), the selections here take from the best of British and American folk styles, resulting in a tight and gripping program.
