Songs and Ballads

“Folk music has come to have a real function in all our lives. In a vague but real way, ‘we,’ the singers and audiences together, form a community of our own”- Sandy Darlington
In a program ranging from American ballads to country music, traditional songs, and original compositions, Sandy and Jeanie Darlington present a blend of styles on this record from the 1960s folk revival. Drawing freely from a wide range of American music, including the old-timey sound of Charlie Poole, modal blues, and Sacred Harp singing, Songs and Ballads is intentionally exploratory, originally released as part of Folk-Legacy Record’s “Interpreters” series. With guitar, fiddle, auto harp, and banjo, the Darlingtons make use of inventive harmonies and unaccompanied ballad singing for a stirring and far-reaching selection of folk songs.
