Smokey Joe Miller and the Georgia Pals
The Georgia Pals

Smokey Joe Miller (1918–2009) and Lawrence Humphries (b. 1918)—The Georgia Pals—accompanying themselves on guitars, perform old and new gospel songs that would likely be heard in an old country church of their native Georgia. Smokey Joe began his musical career in 1936, playing with prominent early country performers Gid Tanner and Riley Puckett. He was also a radio evangelist for 27 years. Lawrence Humphries, a former radio performer, sang with Smokey Joe for over 40 years. Smokey Joe also recorded three secular albums for Folkways: Silver Threads Among the Gold (FW31047), Down Yonder (FW31089), and Old American Heart Throbs (FW31093). Liner notes provide background information on both performers and each song's lyrics.
