The Whitetop Mountain Band draws its name from the second highest independent mountain peck in the Virginia Appalachian mountain range. The band’s nucleus consists of the Spencer family (husband Thornton on fiddle, wife Emily on banjo and vocals, and daughter Martha on guitar, banjo and vocals). On this recording, they are joined by Spencer Pennington on guitar and vocals with Michelle Lyle on string bass. The band’s musical inspiration comes from the tri-state region of southwestern Virginia, western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee; an area rich in Appalachian string band music. This is their only recording for Arhoolie.
