Cimarrón - "Pajarillo" [Live at Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2009]

Cimarrón is an all-star team of instrumentalists and singers from Colombia. In this video, they perform "Pajarillo" at the 2009 Smithsonian Folklife Festival as part of the Las Américas program on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This captures the group's third performance at the Festival, which is also part of the 10-day program Colombia: The Nature of Culture. The song is featured on their 2004 album, Sí, soy llanero: Joropo Music from the Orinoco Plains of Colombia, available on CD and digital.

From the plains of eastern Colombia, the joropo's syncopated drive and top-of-the-lungs singing proclaim a cattle-herding mestizo people proud of their homeland. Percussive harp techniques and fast-picking bandola guitar rise upon a bedrock rhythm of cuatro guitar, bass, and maracas to produce the signature plains sound. Grupo Cimarrón, mainstay ensemble of música llanera (plains music tradition) joins other all-star musicians in energy and virtuosity of their music.
