Hobart Smith of Saltville, Virginia

This collection of songs is the first solo recording of influential mountain music virtuoso Hobart Smith. Though perhaps most notable for his mastery of the banjo, this recording also includes tunes for fiddle and guitar, and presents a diverse selection of his repertoire. Notable inclusions on this record are "Cuckoo Bird" and "The Great Titanic", a song also performed by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Hobart Smith of Saltville, Virginia was recorded over several evenings at WFMT, Chicago, marking one of the few occasions Smith had ever left the his home in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
