Music from the Island of Krk, Yugoslavia
Various Artists

Located off the coast of Croatia, Krk is one of the largest islands in the Adriatic Sea. Krk’s history dates from the time of the Roman Empire and has endured various occupying forces over the centuries. Throughout it has remained a center for Croatian culture. In 1961, Wolfgang and Dagmar Laade travelled to Krk to record the music of the local population. The first nine tracks of the album are examples of diaphonic or parallel singing by men and women. The remaining tracks record music from a local wedding and an extract of a Glagolitic mass and vesper. The liner notes provide background information about the music and song lyrics in Croatian with English translation.
