With His Sons and the Congregation of St. Luke's Powerhouse Church of God in Christ

Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz first heard gospel singer the Reverend Louis Overstreet in Scotlandville, Louisiana, in 1960, and was captivated by Rev. Overstreet’s ability to bring the gospel to people outside of a formal church setting. In 1962, Strachwitz sought out Rev. Overstreet to record him and his sons. He traced him to Phoenix, Arizona, where he was preaching at St. Luke’s Powerhouse Church of God in Christ. This collection features Rev. Overstreet and his four sons in a church service and in solo performance at Rev. Overstreet’s home. These “field” recordings capture the passion of the Rev. Overstreet’s performances.
