A More Complete Folk-Legacy Records
We are excited to announce the addition of 33 titles from Folk-Legacy Records to the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings catalog. Folk-Legacy, founded in 1961 by musicians Sandy and Caroline Paton, alongside their friend and business partner Lee Hagerty, was a label dedicated to the preservation, creation, and circulation of traditional folk music. This group of titles continues the project to re-launch the label that began in the Fall of 2019, and it represents many of the label’s finest recordings from its early years in the 1960s up to its final releases in 2018. Illustrative of the label’s range, the 35 titles include a mix of music from America and the British Isles in the form of field recordings, revival interpreters, and original songwriters. Among them are dulcimer recordings from Edna Ritchie (sister to Jean), unaccompanied singing from the influential Norfolk tradition-bearer Harry Cox, Eugene Rhode’s “smooth Blues” recordings made during his time in an Indiana state prison, and of course, the intricate and beautifully arranged Folk-Revival songs from the label’s flagship trio of Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir, and Ed Trickett.
